With the spread of modernist planning, the uneven development of urban space is becoming increasingly obvious. The artificial city after repeated reconstruction rapidly occupies the most area of the city, and the historical and cultural blocks surrounded have increasingly narrow space.Historical blocks gradually formed and developed in the long process of historical development, the continuous renewal maintains their own vitality and at the same time accumulates the culture and style of the times. Now the development of modern historical blocks has stagnated. And its original aesthetic value, cultural memory and environmental diversity have been gradually buried.Dongguan Street, which has a large scale and is relatively intact, has gone through more than 100 years of history.Dongguan street was a unique product of Dalian as a colony, with great architectural and cultural value. The older generation of Dalian people let the block glow with vitality so that the diet, business and living customs are all cultural soil for Dalian today. But now the old block has become more dilapidated, broken and out of place with its surroundings. In terms of the protection of the historic blocks in our country,it is not enough to do so only through the protection and repair of the block buildings. From the perspective of historical and cultural protection of historic blocks,it will affect the sustainable development of the block and cut its development with the city, making the historic block an isolated island. The preservation and renewal of historic blocks cannot be achieved through protection or wide-ranging transformations.Instead,we must start with the perspective of restoring the vitality of the neighborhood and its own sustainable development,so that the development of the neighborhood can be integrated into daily life.In this way,the issue of the survival and development of modern historical districts can be fundamentally resolved. This topic is based on this idea, retaining the historical memory and culture of the block as the basis for protection and renewal. On this basis, the regeneration and transformation of the block space are taken as the main starting point of the study through a detailed survey of the block space of Dongguan street and combining the specific situation of Dalian city with its own characteristics of history, culture and development. After the theoretical study and the summary of the practical cases of relevant block protection and urban renewal.Taking "microregeneration" as the perspective, starting from the "micro",fully taking into account the dynamic complex relationship between modern historical districts and people, from the "points" to "whole" of the application of the transformation and space activation and quality improvement. As a result, the self-development of the whole block is brought closer to modern life, and it is more contemporary while retaining cultural value.According to the present situation evaluation and space characteristic analysis of three different types of space in Dongguan street block: street, courtyard and building. From the perspective of “microregeneration”,the objectives and principles of space renovation and redevelopment in Dongguan street were put forward based on the theory of genius loci, the theory of rejuvenation of neighborhood vitality, and the theory of external space design. The practice of the protection and space transformation design of Dongguan street was carried out,and it was explored through various methods such as the continuation of the overall historical appearance of the block and the remodeling of the sense of place, the implantation of the communication space, and the improvement of the space quality. This paper hopes to provide constructive solutions for the protection and reconstruction of Dongguan Street. It provides a new idea and provides some references for the protection and transformation of historic blocks under the “microregeneration” perspective.
