Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers(CFRP)technology has been widely adopted to strengthen engineering structures due to its benefits of lightweight, high strength,corrosion-resistance and easy constructability.Based on the state of the research,it is indicated that though numerous work has been done in the field of strengthening steel girders with CFRP plate, geometry defects and corrosion of steel girders have not been considered into the analysis. This paper focuses on the analysis of strengthening damaged H shape steel girder with CFRP plate by establishing and validating finite element model of the CFRP strengthened steel girder.Numerical simulation analysis is implemented to identify the relationship between capacity/stiffness degradation of steel girders and the dimension of corrosion area in the girders and to identify the relationship between the flexural performance of remedial steel girders and the dimension of corrosion area in the girders together with CFRP plate dimension. The paper also discusses the flexural performance of remedial steel girders due to various initial loadings which exist before strengthening. It is suggested that the deformation of the notch in the steel girders will be limited by the inverse arching effect which is generated by pre-stressing CFRP material to improve its efficiency and strength. This paper has discussed the flexural performance of remedial steel girders under different pre-stressed levels of CFRP.The outcome of this paper can be used in both theoretical and experimental research in terms of strengthening damaged steel girders.
