The scale of China's higher education becomes the top of the world after a rapid social and economic development.However,the development of higher education system and talent cultivation mode lags behind the growth of society and economy.An innovative talent must not only have a solid foundation of professional knowledge,but also must possess high comprehensive quality.The cultivation of social ability of university students on the one hand contributes to their academic performance and personality refinement,on the other hand it also helps them to adapt to highly-competent society and behave better in team work.As the communication space in campus is a key influencing factor of social activities,this study investigates the university communication space in the background of the information era with the topic of this research as communication space creation.There are four key points in this thesis.First,information era serves as the historical background and big environment of this research;second,institute of higher education defines the scope and subject of social activities;third,communication space serves as the key argument;fourth,emphasis was last put on the space as the fundamental question of this study.This study starts with a thorough analysis of historical development of university communication space in China and abroad.Compared to that of western developed countries,the communication space in our country is lacking in adequate information technology support,layers of communication space,and architecture.The study then focuses on related theoretical investigation from three aspects,that is,social behavior of students in institutes of higher education,environmental and behavior psychology,and architecture.The outcome of above investigation is the content,pattern,and feature of students' social behavior with emphasis on key points of related psychological theories such as small group behavior,interpersonal distance,personal space,regional space,privacy and so on.The theoretical investigation of architecture is based mainly on classical theories such as “social activities and space”and “outer design of exterior environment” while other new theories on space research in the information era are also included.Next,the study put emphasis on life changes in the information era and the subsequent trend of disappearance of spatial boundaries and development of individualization.Therefore,the characteristics of university communication space inthe information era is then concluded as periodical and fuzzy,permeable and super-positional,individualized and miniaturized,intelligent and interactive.The study then proposes some principles of creating and upgrading communication space in the information era,based on time features and the current status of communication space.Based on the location of space,elements of closure and the relationships between buildings,the communication space can be divided to two big categories and each category can then be separated into two groups.i.e.two big categories refer to exterior social space and interior social space,while the exterior social space can then be separated into public open space and building-attached space and the interior social space includes general social space and specific social space.The investigation of creation of each subspace,following similar structure,focuses on two aspects: 1)characteristics of space and social behavior,and 2)creation and upgrade.Finally,Summarize the research results and innovation points,and look forward to the development of college communication space.
