With the continuous deepening of market-oriented reforming,the private sector is increasingly entering the urban construction field,which also promotes the evolution of urban public space.Compared with traditional open spaces such as squares and parks,the problem of "private occupying" faced by urban waterfront spaces is more serious.With the multi-coexistence of contemporary values,the process of designing,building,and operating urban public spaces is constantly being manipulated by governments,markets,and private interests.How to examine the publicity performance under this new situation has become the starting point of this article.In this paper,four waterfront public spaces,Baicheng Beach,Yanwu Bridge viewing platform,Shapowei shelter,and Yanwu Park,are selected for study cases in Xiagang and Binhai sub-districts in Siming District of Xiamen.Through constructing the theoretical framework and research method system of public research,the causes of the lack of publicity are summed up,and strategies for improving space quality are formulated.In the study,the public observation method was used to analyze the spatial availability and degree of supportiveness of space activities,and qualitatively describe the degree of publicity;the public model evaluation method based on the STAR model was used to analyze the ownership,control,physical configuration,civility and animation which have been evaluated in five dimensions.The main conclusion:1.Baicheng Beach had good accessibility.The observation function was too prominent which limite the diversity of activities.The impact of commercialization on space activities was more obvious.The Yanwu Bridge viewing platform had better accessibility,more outstanding viewing functions,and activity limited more than Baicheng Beach.The accessibility of Shapowei shelter had been general,the function was better than the mix,the public life was well-integrated,a shortage of public facilities,and the space activity was affected by commercialization.Yanwu Park had good accessibility and good integration of public life.2.The relationship between waterfront form and public space publicity is general:In the cases,the waterfront form has a different degree of influence on its spatial publicity.However,in general,the waterfront form can enhance the user’s perception of spatial publicity at the level of public space facilities.3,Better publicity can improve the waterfront public space:improve the availability of space,make the waterfront space play a role in attracting the public to gather,carry out activities,and provide basic guarantee for the vitality of the waterfront public space.To improve the supportability of activities in space,the waterfront space accommodates diverse citizens’ lives,promotes public communication and public expression,and further stimulates the vitality of the waterfront public space.This research has been innovative in the research mode.Most of the domestic academic results on public research have been descriptive or qualitative research.Based on the qualitative observation of public observation and the quantification method of public model evaluation,this article confirms each other.Then compare the causes of the lack of publicity,and respectively for the urban public space design and management of the operation of the actual,public-oriented development of public space to develop strategies to combine the theoretical methods and practical application of practical guidance.
