Ancient architecture and cultural heritage is a symbol of the world’s traditional culture. It bears the memory of civilization since ancient times. The protection of ancient architecture has been paid attention to by experts and scholars from all over the world.During the long-term preservation of ancient buildings, natural disasters,man-made factors and decay of their own materials will result in various geometric deformation, which can be monitored regularly. As one of the typical ancient buildings in China,it is more urgent to monitor tower buildings on a regular basis.Because of the unique shape of ancient pagodas and the complex structure, the traditional monitoring methods are mostly single-point monitoring, because of the unique shape of ancient pagodas. The number and distribution of the sampling points are uncertain,so it is difficult to find the trend of the whole deformation.Secondly,it is difficult to reach the location of some local deformation damage of the ancient pagoda. Therefore, the main monitoring method is to combine the traditional measurement with 3D laser scanning.Photogrammetry and other digital means analyze the law of heritage damage by means of regular monitoring, reduce or eliminate all kinds of risk factors in time, and realize the continuity and sustainable utilization of cultural heritage. The common diseases of the ancient pagoda are tilt, settlement, torsion and some surface spalling. At present, many monitoring work has been carried out in China, which takes the ancient pagoda as the main research object. In this paper, the methods of analyzing the geometric deformation of ancient pagoda, such as settlement, tilt and torsion, which are widely used in our country and whose technical route is more mature, are systematically expounded. And taking the Song Tower of Shanxi Province and the Sherri Tower of Tongzhou Lighting Buddha as experimental data and using various monitoring methods to analyze the settlement, tilt and torsion of the ancient pagoda with different monitoring indexes,Finally,by comparing the form and precision of the shape variables obtained from the experimental data, the most suitable monitoring method for this kind of ancient pagoda is obtained. The results are as follows: Follow-up monitoring work can provide reference suggestions.Because of the wide range of technical fields and strong comprehensiveness involved in heritage monitoring,it is necessary to combine the needs of both management and technology. At present, there are some problems in our country’s heritage monitoring work, such as the disconnection between monitoring and protection management, the insufficient combing of historical data, and so on.This paper presents a monitoring system for ancient pagodas combined with monitoring and management. The basic information and historical data of the ancient pagoda are systematically combed and statistics, and the monitoring data of the past are managed in a unified way,so that the data of each period can be queried and transferred according to the need. The deformation of ancient pagoda diseases can also be analyzed by extracting the central axis from the system fitting center point, and the final deformation diagram can also be stored in the system for display. The future deformation trend of the tower can be further inferred by comparing the cumulative shape variables obtained from themulti-period monitoring data. The sustainable monitoring of the ancient pagoda can be realized by the development of the health monitoring management system of the ancient pagoda.
