The intensification of resources shortage,environmental pollution and traffic congestion makes sustainable development an urgent need for urban construction.Acoordingly,sustainable development is considered an important way for large cities to guide the rational distribution of urban space.In engineering practice,depot yard design is an integrated work and is to determine the depot location and size,the transportation organization plan of traffics on depot tracks,and the process to serve metro vehicles.To date,depot yard design projects are basically assessed quatitatively with few indices.Methods to systematically and quantatively assess the sustainability level of a possible depot designs are unavailable.This thesis will propose such a method to assess the sustainablility level of any depot design possibilities.The proposed method provides an alternative to assess metro designs in a systematic and quantative fashion.(1)A comparative analysis on the researches and practices of sustainability in urban construction and transportation concluded that the depot construction should achieve the goal of coordinated development of resources,environment,economy and society.Based on the finding,an indicator system(which includes the functionality,resource&environment,economy,development&coordination of a depot design)was established to quanlify the depot design's sustanibily.(2)The paper proposed a sustainability assessment methodology for metro depot yard projects.Firstly,the weight of each indicator was determined based on the experiences of experts with different backgrounds.Secondly,different methods were adopted to standardize weight values according to indicators' features.At last,depot designs are quantified sustaniabily based on the standardized weith values with Generalized Indicator Function.(3)The proposed assessment method was applied to two design options of a depot yard S undertaken by a project design institute,where the author worked for a half year.By setting the method with different preferences(i.e.,system optimization and partial optimization),each design option is assigned a sustanibility level.It was found that the stake-holder of the depot yard S has more interest in its functionalities and cost.If making the selection decision in a sustainably fashion(i.e.,in addition to functionalites and depot construction cost,resources should be included),another option should be adopted.In short,the proposed method provides an alternative to metro depot design assessment,and more accurately speaking gives a sustainablilty level for each depot design option.
