Landscape Evaluation And Design Of University Campus Square Based On Affordance Theory

American eco-psychologist J.J.Gibson first proposed the theory of affordance in 1978,and it was introduced to the design world by Donald Arthur Norman.It is carried out extensive research and application in engineering design,product design and human-computer interaction design(HCI),etc.At present,there are few applications of the affordance theory in landscape architecture design.And few research references could be found at home and abroad.The author believes that the theory of affordance can be used as an intermediary and bridge to understand the relationship between human and environment.It emphasizes that the interaction between people and environment,which has inherent adaptability with the theory of landscape architecture.Therefore,it could supplement new theoretical perspectives and research methods for landscape architecture design.Through current situation and trendencies of domestic and overseas theoretical research,field survey,doing qualitative and quantitative analysis method,the author analyzes the connotation and denotation;demonstrate the combinative applicability of affordance theory and landscape architecture.This paper proposes an optimization design procedure based on external theory,and summarizes the corresponding strategies and general methods.A conceptual framework for university campus square evaluating and designing based on the theory of affordance.Three questions are presented in this thesis.First,it puts forward the hypothesis of combining affordance with landscape design.Based on contrastive analysis on affordance and landscape architecture,it demonstrates the feasibility of the combination of these two.Secondly,the ASM(Affordance Structre Matirx)of Meland and Fadel are developed to apply in the evaluation and research of landscape architecture design.By established matrix,we do analysis and evaluation on field survey results of the campus square.Based on the theory of affordance,we establish campus square evaluating system to evaluate the occurance and quality that affordance happened in campus square,as well as clear availability interaction problems and the reasons of the square.The matrix is used to reverse validation and optimize the built-up affordance structure.The the research data can be archived and classified as the basis of subsequent design research,which is used to guide new and reconstruction design.Thirdly,the study of campus square optimization and design method based on the theory of affordance is carried out by reference to field model.The optimization design of campus square can be summarized as four strategies,unscramble environment using afforance thought,built system framework,problem decomposition,feedback and place on file.In this paper,the design method of campus square is optimized with six steps,such as definite intention of design,analysis space inscape etc.Based on these,the conceptual framework of campus square(open space)based on the theory of affordance is established.At last,it takes iron stone square of Shenyang Jianzhu University as an example to verify and apply optimal design strategy of campus square based on the theory of affoedance.The author believes that this conceptual framework can be applied to the whole process of external space design,which could enrich and optimize existing design theories and design methods.This article focuses on applying theory of affordance into landscape architecture design,evaluating and optimizing campus square space availability,establishing design strategy and methodology framework,as well as put it as the basis of in-depth study and practice in the future.As a young theory with vitality and adaptability,the combination of availability and landscape architecture discipline is only just beginning.It needs many arguments and discussion in many ways,and constantly improving and optimizing proposed research.In that case,the research on theory of affordance provides new ideas for the theory and practice of contemporary landscape architecture.
