In transmission lines and various electrical equipment, composite insulators play a important part in supporting and insulation.Composite insulators play a vital role in the safe operation of electric power system. Therefore, the study on the contamination characteristic of composite insulators surface has important meaning for timely monitoring contamination and prevent the occurrence of pollution flash-over.Scholars at home and abroad mostly focus on the test point of checkerboard, researches from the perspective of numerical simulation is not comprehensive enough. This paper where Comsol numerical simulation software is used done some numerical simulation researches on the contamination characteristic of composite insulator of FXBW-110/ 120-2 type.According to the structural parameters of the composite insulator of FXBW-110/ 120-2 type which is provided by the manufacturer, the three-dimensional physical model is established.Simulation of the composite insulator of FXBW-110/120-2 type is done, where the turbulence k-ε module(spf),static electricity module(es)and electric current module(sc),particle tracking module(fpt)of Comsol numerical simulation software is used. And the simulation results are compared with the results of wind-tunnel test,to judge the credibility of this method.By the analysis of the simulation results, the effect of wind speed, particle size, concentration and electric field type to the contamination characteristic of the composite insulator is obtained.Paper research shows that: The results of numerical simulation and wind-tunnel test results are the same amount in magnitude;they change with the voltage level at the similar trend;the simulation method can be considered as feasible. For the natural contamination, the quantity of contamination of the insulator surface increase with wind speed and the concentration, but have certain saturation;with increase of the particle size, the quantity of contamination was first decreased and then increased;due to the size and direction of the electric field force, when 90 kV voltage is applied, the quantity of contamination of each umbrella group increase as “W”,but AC voltage has little effect on contamination;when wind speed is low,the influence of DC voltage on the contamination is great, but concentration has little effect on contamination;when wind speed is high, the influence of DC voltage on contamination is little, but concentration has great effect on contamination.
