Porcelain double umbrella insulators are widely used for structural support andinsulation of various transmission lines and electrical equipments, and play a vital role ofpower system’s safety operation. Therefore, the pollution characteristic studies ofporcelain double umbrella insulator and getting the pollution laws are significant formonitoring contamination quantity and preventing pollution flashover. Most scholars athome and abroad focus on experiments studies, while the research carried out bynumerical simulation is still not comprehensive enough. This paper combines windtunnel experiments and numerical simulation method to study the contaminationcharacteristics of double umbrella XWP2-160porcelain insulatorsThe contamination experiments of XWP2-160porcelain insulator were conductedunder different DC voltages by using the wind tunnel system in the college, and obtainedthe change laws of that insulator’s surface NSDD by DC voltage. According to thestructure parameter, a three-dimensional physical model of that insulator in the windtunnel system was established, numerical simulation software Fluent was used tosimulate the process of contamination, the influence rule of wind speed, particleconcentration, particle size, DC voltage and other factors for that insulator’s surfacefouling were gained. The results of experiment and simulation were analyzed andcompared.Studies show that the deposition characteristics of waste particles in the insulatorsurface are mainly affected by its flow resistance, gravity and electric field force, whilethese forces are related to the wind speed, particle concentration, particle size and DCvoltage. When the four above factors increases, the fouling amounts in insulator surfaceall increase and have a certain saturation, especially for wind velocity and DC voltage. When the wind velocity is high, the fouling amounts increases slower and smaller growthwith the DC voltage; when the wind speed is small, the fouling amounts have faster andlarger growth with DC voltage increase. In addition, the fouling law of some special partsof the insulator was analysed, the results were available for the insulator type design, contamination monitoring and other related work.
