Emissions mitigation is one of the biggest challenges facing by Chinese government, this paper uses a unified framework and a unique firm-level energy consumption data, firstly investigate the correlation between imported inputs and environmental performance in Chinese manufacturing firms. Our benchmark results show imported input can significantly improve firms' carbon emission efficiency. To solve “self-selection bias”,we employ propensity score matching(PSM)and inverse probability weighting(IPW),both of the two methods confirm the causal relations.our further structure estimation according to Ackerberg ?(2015)also show significant cleaning effect of import, especially for domestic and dirtier firms.Further direct estimations and sub-sample regressions confirm that imported inputs clean Chinese firms mainly through “productivity enhancement” channel.
