In the production process of the steel coil,there are serval processing segments.The online steel coils must be identified with one unique identification code which contains information of the steel coils.The identification code must be kept always on the steel coils on line.This demands that the identification code written is not on the strapping belts of the steel coil and because the strapping belts of the steel coil are discarded in the next segment.In order to ensure that the identification code is not marked on the strapping belts of the steel coil,the positions of the strapping belts on the steel coils need be detected.The detection method of the positions of the strapping belts on the steel coils is the research content of this paper.The related theory of image processing technology are introduced firstly,including the basic types of images and the transformation methods between them,image filtering,edge detection,Hough transform and straight line fitting principle.Then the demand of the project is investigated and images of the steel coil with strapping belts are analyzed.On the basis,a new solution is presented.In the new solution,the fact that edges of strapping belts are vertical is used to simplify the detection algorithm and a new region of interest(ROI)is set to obtain the left edges and the right edges of strapping belts on the steel coils easily.The scheme is designed and accomplished with LABVIEW.The results of application in the laboratory indicates that the design achieves the goal of the system and this lays the foundation of application on line.
