The main component of biodiesel is fatty acid methyl ester and fatty acid ethyl ester. The drilling fluid prepared with biodiesel is similar with oil-based drilling fluid in performance, but its intrinsic properties are quite different from traditional oil-based drilling fluids.Nowadays, due to increasingly stringent environmental requirements and energy constraints, biodiesel has great potential for application due to its excellent environmental performance and recyclability. There are not many researches on the application of biodiesel in drilling fluids,as well as fewer studies on the stability mechanism of biodiesel water-in-oil emulsions. It is especially necessary to explore the stability of biodiesel water-in-oil emulsions.A water-in-oil emulsion based on biodiesel obtained by waste cooking oil is investigated,in this article, with the knowledge of emulsion theory and practice as well as the principles of drilling fluid technology. The effects of water-oil ratio,CaCl2concentration in aqueous phase, primary and secondary emulsifiers, lime and organic soil on the stability of biodiesel water-in-oil emulsion were explored. The emulsion we choose is investigated at different temperatures in particularly. In view of the shortcomings of the biodiesel water-in-oil emulsion system we choose,an improved experiment was conducted to obtain a better biodiesel water-in-oil emulsion. In this paper, the stability mechanism of biodiesel water-in-oil emulsion was explored, which provided a reference for application of biodiesel in drilling fluid field in the future.
