There is a long history of China's incense culture,which can be traced back to the pre-Qin or even earlier.The incense culture reached its peak in the Song Dynasty.At that time,incense-related matters had been daily already,and its details can be seen in paintings of the Song dynasty.This paper takes paintings of Song Dynasty as the research object,starts with the two aspects of incense utensils and incense-related matters in Song dynasty,mainly applies the research methods of iconography,literature survey and induction,and analyzes the inheritance and innovation of incense utensils in Song dynasty and incense-related matters in different classes showing style and features of incense culture in Song dynasty to reveal the difference and inclination of incense-using behaviors of main bodies in different classes.The upper class got extravagant tastes with incense,not only did they pursue marvelous fragrance,but pay attention to physical enjoyment.They were partial to the material aspect of incense culture.While the masses attached importance to the practical applicability,which is embodied in every aspect of daily life.This is based on the extremely familiar cognition with the nature of incense and experienced application.The scholars preferred the virtue and temperament of incense.They often took advantage of incense to express their emotion and ambition.Through research,the author considers the Song dynasty as the mature era of incense culture.From then on,the influence of incense on the later ages has never been weakened.That is because the people in the Song dynasty changed the incense into a materially and mentally necessity in their way.
