Tibetan paper is one of the most important ethnic papers in China which can be traced back to Tang Dynasty.According to a legend,Tang Princess Wencheng took the papermaking technique to Tibet, but due to the lack of raw materials such as bamboo, straw, and fishing net used in traditional papermaking, the Tibetan and Han nationalities had to replace the original raw materials using the root of Stellera chamaejasme--a toxic plant commonly grown in Tibet.Over the years many attempts,a unique papermaking technique and the characteristic paper were finally generated. At present, the research on Tibetan paper is mainly based on its history, manufacturing technique, and status survey etc. However, there are few institutional or confirmatory studies on its advantages. In order to further promote the publicity, development and industrialization of Tibetan paper,it is extremely meaningful and necessary to use scientific methods to evaluate its durability and mildew resistance. In this experiment,Zhikong Tibetan paper is selected was the research object,in order to touch the blind area in the research field of Tibetan paper. It could provide a scientific and reasonable specification for the creation of national characteristic brand handmade paper for Zhikong Tibetan paper, and provide basic data and application examples for the utilization of toxic plants in grassland.Enhance the confidence of the national handicraft industry and contribute to local development. In this study, national standard based tests were adopted to measure the quantity, whiteness, folding resistance, tensile strength, and tearing index of the Zhikong Tibetan Paper in comparison with the standard of GB/T24422-2009;analyses of the fiber morphology was performed as well.In order to comprehensively evaluate the durability, the dry heat aging treatment and infrared spectrum scanning were applied to the paper samples to measure the characteristic indexes before and after aging.Furthermore, the spawns in the mildew books were separated by mold separation method, and the domain spawns were identified by Test Kit.The inhibition effect of Zhikong Tibetan Paper on the dominant strains of paper mold was determined by air exposure method;results were compared to the mildewproof level in GB/T4768-2008 and GB/T2423.16-2008.In addition, qualitative measurements of total flavonoids in Zhikong Tibetan Paper were performed by means of infrared spectroscopy. The results of the experiments are as follow:1.Determination of basic properties of Zhikong Tibetan Paper:The quantity, tensile strength, folding resistance, whiteness, tear index and air permeability of Zhikong Tibetan Paper were determined by national standard methods. Results showed that the paper had a basis weight of 56.6g/m~2;whiteness of 53.18%;air permeability of 432.56?m/Pa·s;folding resistance of 12 times(longitudinal)and 43 times(transverse direction);tensile strength of2.14 kN/m(lateral)and 3.27 kN/m(longitudinal);and tear index of 37.34 mN·m~2/g(transverse)and 32.59 mN·m~2/g(longitudinal).Besides,the cells in the Zhikokng Tibetan paper pulp were observed as well;it is found that there are many miscellaneous cells in the pulp with an average fiber length and width of 1.13?m and 18.30?m,respectively.2.Durability evaluation of Zhikong Tibetan Paper:The paper samples were processed by dry heat accelerated aging method, and the durability indexes such as whiteness, folding resistance and tensile strength were measured and the retention rate was calculated, and infrared spectrum analysis was also carried out.The results showed that the whiteness, folding resistance and tensile strength retention of Zhikong Tibetan Paper were 95.22%,74.65%and 79.71%,respectively,which were higher than the control group.Meanwhile, the infrared spectrum of the paper samples all showed variations before and after aging, but the peak change of the Zhikong Tibetan Paper was the smallest indicating that the Zhikong Tibetan paper had a good durability.According to the results,it can be seen that, the descriptions in the literatures for the papers on the aspect of durability and easy preservation were objective and basically conformed to the traditional view of“paper life millennium”.3.Study on the mildew resistance of Zhikong Tibetan Paper:12 kinds of molds were extracted from naturally moldy books by means of separation of mildew paper. After verification by A4 paper, four dominant strains were obtained,Aspergillus niger,Penicillium funiculosum,Trichoderma viride, and Rhizopus stolonifera, which were identified by morphology and molecular biology. The mildew resistance of Zhikong Tibetan Paper was investigated on the basis of these four strains, and results showed a mildew resistance of 1-grade,0-grade,2-grade,and 2-grade,respectively,which indicated that a good mildew resistance of Zhikong Tibetan Paper was achieved.4.Determination of total flavonoids in Zhikong Tibetan Paper:For the study of the good performance of Zhikong Tibetan Paper, the infrared spectrum scanning was carried out for Zhikong Tibetan Paper powder,Stellera chamaejasme powder and standard rutin to qualitatively measure the flavonoids. It is observed that the Zhikong Tibetan paper powder,Streptozoon root powder and standard rutin have similar infrared spectrum scans, which indicated that the Zhikong Tibetan paper retained total flavonoids in its raw materials during the production process and thus we can speculate that its good properties are derived from the total flavonoids.
