As the basic sector of China’s economic construction, the development status of the agricultural sector is directly related to social stability, economic health and the realization of people’s happiness.Because the geographical location, economic conditions and resource endowment of the provincial administrative units in China make the economic development between regions uneven, and there is the trend of alienation,so the study of club convergence, which advocates "convergence in the group",is more suitable for China’s national conditions. How to bring together the convergent regions to find the differences between regions,so that advanced areas to drive the development of backward areas is particularly important.Based on a completely new angle, instead of the integrity of the energy intensity analysis, this study refined the agricultural production process. The agricultural inputs divided into four types of energy(chemical energy, heat energy, mechanical power energy and biological energy),the construction of their respective energy intensity indicators. The characteristics of energy intensity change of agricultural inputs are studied systematically.Through the analysis,it is found that the agricultural energy intensity in China decreased from 1.98 PJ/billion yuan to 1.02 PJ/billion yuan in 1997-2016,and the annual decline rate was 3.43%.There is an alternative relationship between biological energy and mechanical power, the slope of fitting curve is-0.80,and goodness of fit is 0.94.There is a downward trend in the σ coefficient of the four types of energy, which indicates that the absolute gap between regions is decreasing.Ignoring the heterogeneity between regions, there is absolute β convergence in the four types of energy intensity, and the convergence rate is 4.92%,0.51%,2.47% and 5.79%,respectively.On the basis of qualitative analysis of energy intensity gap between regions, considering the heterogeneity between regions, the nonlinear time-varying factor model is used to divide the convergent clubs of four kinds of energy intensity, and then the convergence rate equations are established.Secondly, based on sequential probability model, the mechanism of influencing club formation is explored. It is found that: in the east and west regional division method, only the eastern of the mechanical energy and the western of the biological energy have club convergence, and the rest do not converge, which is not suitable for China’s national conditions.chemical energy intensity, heat energy intensity, mechanical power energy intensity and bioenergy intensity contain 2,2,3 and 3 convergent clubs, respectively, the conditions of the four kinds of energy intensity effect are 11,2,11 and 17,respectively.After determining the energy intensity gap and the difference between clubs, the comprehensive energy utilization efficiency, energy saving target of each region, energy saving target ratio, the technological progress caused by the DEA method and the Malmquist index method are calculated respectively. This provide data support to narrow regional disparities. It is found that the overall energy utilization efficiency is 0.79 in 1997-2016,TFCEE,TFHEE,TFMEE,TFBEE were 0.75,0.63,0.78,0.74,respectively.The comprehensive energy saving of chemical energy, heat energy, mechanical power energy and biological energy in China is 13.41 EJ、5.39 EJ、5.57 EJ、7.65 EJ.This study explore the regional gap of agricultural energy input in China from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives, investigate a new path for the reduction of the overall energy intensity of agriculture, provide data support for government policy makers. This will help speed up the process of agricultural energy conservation and emission reduction in China and realize the comprehensive modernization of agriculture.
