In 2011,China's urban population surpassed the rural population for the first time, marking a profound change in China's demographic structure, which has been dominated by rural population for thousands of years. While urbanization promotes economic development and improves people's living standards,it also brings various environmental problems, among which carbon emissions from transport sector are an important example. Many studies have found that urbanization is an important factor affecting traffic carbon emissions, some of which also have substantiated the existence of Environmental Kuznets Curve(EKC)relationship between them. However, most of these studies have not unclosed the"black box" hidden behind the curve, that is,the understanding of the mechanism through which urbanization affects traffic carbon emissions is still unclear. In order to open the "black box" behind the Environmental Kuznets Curve, this paper explores the impact mechanism of urbanization on traffic carbon emissions through theoretical and empirical research, with a view to understanding the relationship between human activities and environment, and to provide reference for the low-carbon transport development in China's New Urbanization.Firstly, this paper reviews and summarizes the relevant theories and literature, which lays the theoretical foundation for the following parts. Then, combined with literature review, this paper uses Migration Theories,Rural-Urban Transformation Theories,Urban Spatial Structure Theory and the study of Environmental Kuznets Curve to analyze the impact mechanism of urbanization on traffic carbon emissions, and puts forward the hypotheses of this study from three perspectives:Growth Effect,Structural Effect and Agglomeration Effect.Next, based on the improved STIRPAT model of IPAT equation, this paper empirically tests the impact of urbanization on traffic carbon emissions in China. On this basis, the mechanism of urbanization affecting traffic carbon emissions is tested, and the hypotheses proposed above is verified. The empirical results show that China's current urbanization has a positive role in promoting traffic carbon emissions. The relationship between traffic carbon emissions and urbanization only conforms to the left part of the environmental Kuznets curve,so it is urgent to explore the inflection point of the potential "inverted U" curve. In terms of the mechanism of urbanization's impact on traffic carbon emissions, urbanization has imposed Growth Effect,Structural Effect and Agglomeration Effect on traffic carbon emissions, which together lead to the trend of rapid growth of traffic carbon emissions in the process of urbanization in China. To conclude,in China's urbanization process, the transportation industry develops rapidly, but there is a large space for optimizing the energy structure, traffic structure and urban spatial structure, and a lack of.reasonable and effective low-carbon path guidance for energy use.All these factors together contribute to a rapid growth trend of transport carbon emissions in China's urbanization process.Based on the research conclusion and the background of the reform of Ecological Civilization and the New Urbanization in China, this paper finally puts forward some issues that should be focused on in particular for the development of low-carbon transportation in China.
