| Cantonese-style furniture is one of intangible cultural heritage in China.It originated from the Ming Dynasty palace hardwood furniture production skills,developed in the Qing Dynasty and declined in the Republic of China during the war,after the founding of the country to be restored and developed.Under the impact of the modern market,the 21 st century Cantonese-style furniture’s innovation and development are becoming slow.Therefore,heritage and innovation are the requirements for the survival and development of Cantonese-style furniture in the new century.Taking the existing Cantonese-style furniture in Guangzhou as the research object,using the methods as literature research,character interviews,on-site surveying and mapping,and online questionnaire surveys.Also,the research was combined with chart analysis,data statistics,and formula calculations.The research contents mainly includes historical analysis and analysis of the development of contemporary Cantonese-style furniture,the research and study of existing Cantonese-style furniture and its characteristics of art,the study of furniture decoration techniques and materials,and the contemporary survey of Cantonese-style furniture,as well as research on furniture design and practice.There are 4 conclusions about the study:(1)After the founding of the People’s Republic of China,Cantonese-style furniture was developed under the support and protection of the state.It reached a peak of development from 1972 to 1979.The development trend was to restore flatly first,then to reach a peak with rapid development,and finally to decline.The influencing factors of the entire development process include the need of the country to create foreign exchange and restore the economy,the centralized training of design and production personnel,the liberation of the productive forces after the implementation of the “1st Five-Year Plan”,the introduction of modern production equipment,the strong market response at the Canton Fair,the reform and opening up,the impact of the market,flow of talented people,one-sided design and positioning.Through the history of Cantonese-style furniture after the founding of the PRC,in-depth exploration of the influencing factors and the study of representative works in various historical periods can provide inspiration and lessons for the development and innovation of contemporary Cantonese-style furniture.(2)The historical period of Cantonese-style furniture in Guangzhou are from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China,their types mainly include sofa chairs,public chairs,round table stools,dressers,triangle chairs and other furniture with Lingnan regional features.Most of their shape are combined by Chinese furniture and Western furniture,and their sizes ratio close to modern furniture,which are ergonomic.Having rich patterns,Cantonese-style furniture set the traditional Chinese auspicious materials and Lingnan special materials to create,with unique regional characteristics.Through detailed study of the Cantonese-style furniture’s characteristics,can sum up the design rules and verification of historical phenomena,then supporting some innovation data to the back of the contemporary Cantonese-style furniture design.(3)Cantonese-style furniture follows traditional furniture production techniques,adding decorative arts such as wood carving,marble inlaying,screw inlay,glass painting,painting,inlaying tiles,inlay embroidery and treasure inlay,etc.Sum up the decorative arts as wood carving,inlaying and painting.On the timber,the materials are generous,and the curved members of the furniture legs are generally dug into a single piece of wood.Wood species include rosewood,chicken wing wood,ironwood,Phoebe,Pontianak,pineapple,teak and eucalyptus,hard wood,which with petty color and beautiful textures.(4)Questionnaire results show that people under the age of 40 are the main subjects to be surveyed,and the most frequently used furniture are bed,dining table,dining chair,wardrobe,and sofa chair.The proposal for the innovative design of contemporary Cantonese-style furniture is inheriting from traditional culture.Based on the characteristics of innovation,the modeling requirements are younger and more fashionable.The same model with space is the most popular model.Through the above conclusions,we can reflect on the development issues of modern Cantonese-style furniture.Finally,designing cases to provide suggestions and ideas for the innovative development of contemporary Cantonese-style furniture. |
