With the increasing emphasis of the environmental protection, the emission requirements for volatile organic compounds(VOCs)have become increasingly stringent.Compared with other methods, the treatment of the VOCs by porous media combustion technology have several superiorities such as avoided secondary pollution, lower equipment investment and operating costs, reduced emissions of pollutants, and reu sing the heat generated by combustion with higher economy.Ethylene is selected as a typical representative of VOCs,the detailed experimental investigation has been done in the porous media combustion experiment system.Because of the less study at home and abroad, the characteristics of ethylene combustion are studied firstly, and then the treatment efficiency is studied.Experimental data is provided for the treatment of VOCs in the practical application. The main research contents are as follows:(1)The experimental investigation of the characteristics of the ethylene combustion temperature in porous media has been done with the effect of equivalence ratio and premixed gas flow rate. The results show that when the equivalent ratio is ranged from 0.300 to 0.425,the flame propagates is downstream. While the equivalent ratio ranges from 0.550 to 0.700,the flame propagates is contrary. It is stationary combustion when the equivalent ratio is ranged from 0.425 to 0.550.If the equivalence ratio is larger or smaller, the flame will not spread steadily.(2)The propagation characteristics of flame front in porous media has been studied with the effect of equivalence ratio and premixed gas flow rate and the system stable combustion limit has been obtained. The experimentally results show that when the flame is upstream, the velocity of the combustion wave is inversely proportional to the equivalent ratio and the flow rate of the premixed gas. When the flame is downstream, the result is opposite.(3)The experimental study has been done which are the influencing factors to the efficiency of VOCs treatment and the characteristics of system pollutants with the effects of equivalence ratio and flow rate of premixed gas to the ethylene treatment efficiency. The results show that ethylene treatment efficiency and ethylene concentration are positively correlated and the flow rate of premixed gas has little to do.The optimal ethylene treatment condition is that ethylene concentration is 4.9% and the premixed gas flow rate is 0.300m/s in the experimental conditions. The total amount of NOx generated by combustion are very small, less than 10 ppm.
