The frictional properties of the fabric surface affect the hand-feel,comfortable of wearing and other using performances,and the fabric surface roughness is an important factor affecting the frictional properties of the fabric surface.In order to facilitate its related research,to measure the surface roughness of fabric accurately,rapidly with low-cost has important theoretical and practical significance.The methods of measuring the surface roughness of fabric are divided into two major parts: subjective method and objective method.Subjective evaluation method is time-consuming and labor-intensive,which requires a high degree of experience on the testing staff,and the measurement results can not be quantified;The objective method is divided into contact and non-contact methods.However,due to the probes contact to fabric surface,it will change the original state of the fabric surface,which reduces the measurement accuracy.Non-contact measurement commonly using optical instruments by analyzing the reflected light to get the rough surface of the fabric,but the instruments are expensive with high-cost measurement.Exploring the method of measuring the initial surface roughness of fabric accurately,efficiently,automatically and cost-effectively has a positive effect on the characterization and research on the relative performance of apparel and industrial fabrics.In order to obtain the initial surface roughness of the fabric,this study researches and designs non-contact method combined with image processing technology to measure the surface roughness of fabric.The warp and weft directions of sample fabrics were tested.Each sample was tested at least 3 times in different positions and compared the surface roughness of different type woven fabrics.In this paper,non-contact method is used to measure the surface roughness of fabric,and the "cross-section" images of fabric surface are obtained by the self-built image acquisition device.The images contain the contour curve of fabric surface,which can be detected by imaging process to calculate surface roughness of fabric.Compared with the existing measurement system,this system has the following advantages:1)Using non-contact method to measure surface roughness of fabric,the process does not contact the surface of fabric,so the original state of fabric surface is maintained,and which more objectively reflects the initial surface morphology of fabric and the results are more accurate and closer to actual state of fabric surface.2)The whole testing process is simple and stable,it intelligently controls the sample fabric to move automatically,quickly collects images of fabric surface and uses the programmed program to batch process images in MATLAB.The program is accurate,stable and high efficiency.The price of whole instrument is cheap.3)Other properties of fabric surface can be evaluated by changing the algorithm,such as pilling assessment,surface wear assessment and so on.According to the information of fabric surface obtained from the experiment,the three-dimensional topography of the fabric surface is constructed,which is visually and clearly displayed.In this experiment,Arduino was used to control the speed and steering parameters of stepper motor.The stepper motor was used to drive the fabric to move step by step.The surface contour images of different positions of the fabric were collected and processed by MATLAB software to obtain the surface contour curve of fabric and surface roughness,and compared five edge detection algorithms.Firstly,a series of surface cross-sectional profile images of fabric in the detected direction are obtained by an image capture device.Each of the images reflects the surface profile of the fabric at one position,similar to the cross-sectional slice.Then use the self-prepared program to process each image to get the surface profile curve and surface roughness(SMD)of the fabric,and take the average value of series of surface roughness as the comprehensive surface roughness(SMD)of the fabric in the detection direction.The three-dimensional reconstruction of the fabric surface contour can be achieved through calculating the surface contour curves,which can more directly show the contour of fabric surface.Measuring different woven fabrics’ surface roughness,the results measured by this system are compared with the results of hand evaluation and KES system measurement respectively.The results show the same trend with good correlation and consistency,which confirms that the application of this system to evaluate the woven fabric surface roughness is feasible.
