| Titanium and its alloys have been widely used as the medical implants. However, they are bio-inert materials, showing no biological activity and antibacterial ability. In addition, their corrosion resistance and mechanical property in physiological environment should be further improved for clinical application. In this paper, carbon ions,C/C u or N/Cu dual ions were implanted into the titanium surface using plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition(PIII&D)technology. The corrosion resistance, mechanical property, antibacterial ability and cytocompatibility of the modified titanium surfaces were investigated. The main results obtained were discussed as follows:A modified layer consisting of amorphous carbon was prepared on titanium by carbon-plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition(C-PIII&D)technology.After the C-PIII&D modification, the water contact angle and zeta potential value of the titanium surface increase, and the surface mechanical propert y and corrosion resistance are improved. The surface of titanium modified by C-PIII&D can inhibit the adhesion of E.coli, and the chemical composition of the surface plays an important role in affecting the adhesion of E.coli.C-PIII&D modified titanium surface does not show cytotoxicity.Amorphous carbon and copper nanoparticles were observed on the surface of titanium implanted by carbon and copper, and titanium carbide existed on the near-surface region of titanium. The surface of titanium modified by C/C u-PIII&D shows good corrosion resistance and mechanical property. The C u/C galvanic corrosion was formed on the surface of C /Cu dual ion implanted titanium. The release of copper ions can be effectively controlled by the galvanic corrosion effect.Improved antibacterial performance of titanium surface can be recived without cytotoxicity.Cu NPs were embedded in Titanium nitride film by N/Cu dual ions implantation. The N/C u ions implanted titanium exhibits good mechanical properties of the material due to the TiN modified layer. The corrosion resistance of the N/Cu ions implanted titanium is improved, which may related to the formation of Cu/TiN micro-galvanic couples. The good antibacterial ability and angioge nic activity were observed on the surface of N/Cu ions implanted titanium. In conclusion, carbon ions,C/Cu or N/Cu dual ions implanted the titanium surface exhibit excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical property. The carbon implanted titanium surface does not show obvious antibacterial ability. The co-implantation of carbon and copper can enhance antibacterial ability because of the Cu/C mico-galvanic corrosion effect;C u/TiN micro-galvanic couples can form on the surface of titanium implanted by nitrogen and copper dual ions, which can enhance the antibacterial and angiogenic preformances of the titanium surface. |
