Designer surface plasmons(Designer SPs)is a kind of electromagnetic(EM)wave confined at the structured metallic surface,which is capable to achieve subwavelength confinements of the EM waves at microwave and THz bands.Hence,they provide a noval approach to the miniaturization of devices and antennas.Designer localized surface plasmons(Designer LSPs)have important potential applications in sensors,antenas and so on.This thesis focuses on miniaturized antennas and devices based on designer LSPs.The main researches and contributions of the thesis are listed as bellow:1.A plasmonic metamaterial antenna based on a corrugated ring resonator by using characteristic modes theory and full wave analysis method has been designed.By introducing the defected ground structure(DGS),the antenna dimension has been decreased obviously.Finally,a multiband electrically small antenna with medium gains has been achieved.2.A plasmonic metamaterial antenna based on a corrugated metal-insulator-metal(MIM)ring resonator structure has been designed.By introducing T-shaped graves,the antenna achieves multiband,electrically small and high gains simultaneously.Furthermore,a self-sustained sensor node using such antenna has been implemented.3.A new mechanism to excite the plasmonic metamaterials has been proposed.By adjusting the coupling in and coupling out structure,an ultrawide band-pass filter with flat-top transmission band based on spoof LSPs has been implemented.By introducing an active element,the upper-side band of the filter can be electrically tunable.Finally,the out-band performance of the bandpass filter has been further optimized.4.A microfluidic ethanol chemical sensor based on the corrugated MIM ring resonator has been designed.By aligning the microfluidic channel along the strongest electric filed,a sensor with a high sensitivity to detect ethanol with different high concentrations can be achieved.We further analyze the electric-field properties on the 1/2 and 1/4 corrugated MIM ring resonator to achieve a more sensitive and compact microfluidic ethanol chemical sensor.
