How It Possible To Explain The Phenomenon Of Consciousness By The Integrated Information Theory

The study of consciousness has a long history.There are various theories about consciousness.For the context of neuroscience research,Giulio Tononi puts forward the Integrated Information Theory(ⅡT)that tries to describe consciousness as an integration and quantitative study of information.ⅡT describes the shape of perception quality of consciousness,measures the value of producing consciousness,explains the production of consciousness experience.The higher the measured value,the higher the quality of our conscious experience,and our conscious experience will be c ompleted and riched.As ⅡT is a scientific study of consciousness experience,it is also a scientific explanation of consciousness phenomenon.In the face of consciousness phenomenon with strong subjectivity,as compared with general natural phenomenon,only the pragmatics which emphasizes on the scientific explanation of context theory(the unity of morphology,semantics and pragmatics)can well investigate ⅡT’s explanation of consciousness phenomenon and show the rationality of ⅡT.According to the pragmatics of Bas van Fraassen’s scientific explanation,a scientific explanation is the answer to"why-problem".The "why-problem" model is used to explain that ⅡT is based on the premise that PK is true,that consciousness is real to further illustrate that experience is choice.This also accords with the empirical appropriateness of the scientific theory emphasized by the pragmatics of scientific explanation.And it is precisely ⅡT that emphasizes the Pragmatics of scientific explanation to emphasize the context,if it has different context,the brain’s information integration mechanism will be different,resulting in the conscious experience is not the same,which explains the privacy of conscious experience.From Pragmatics of scientific explanation,ⅡT takes consciousness as the object of scientific study to explain the process of conscious experience from the perspective of neuroscience and the internal information integration mechanism of the brain,ⅡT may even combine the first-person Perspective and the third-person Perspective of consciousness studies if context-related analysis is further strengthened.From the perspective of pragmatics,we can not only explain the rationality of integrated information theory,but also guide the further development of integrated information theory.However,the theory of integrated information is still a developing theory,which needs to be further studied.At present,it seems too early to say that it has solved the problem of consciousness.
