The classification and categorization of resources is an important content of resource management.By systematical comparison and analysis of the domestic and foreign schemes for petroleum resources classification and categorization, considering the current situation and requirement of petroleum resources assessment and management in our country,in this paper we proposed a new scheme for conventional petroleum resources classification,in which the undiscovered petroleum resources can be divided into three categories with the level of geological understandings in the descending order:1)prospective,2)speculative Ⅰ,and 3)speculative Ⅱ;the amount of prospective resources is typically the undiscovered resources that in mapped but undrilled prospects;the amount of speculative resources Ⅰ is the undiscovered resources in assessment units(basin/depression,petroleum system,or play)in which oil-and gas-bearing conditions are still unidentified;the amount of speculative resources Ⅱ is the undiscovered resources in assessment units in which oil-and gas-bearing conditions are not identified and most of the parameters for resources estimation are acquired by analogy.Because most of the prospects data are kept in confidential by the petroleum companies, they are unavailable for this analysis and the amount of prospective resources is thought to be a part of speculative resources Ⅰ.Based on the above scheme, the conventional oil and gas resources in main oil and gas basins in China are analyzed statistically:the total amount of conventional oil and gas resources of China is up to 1141.55×10~8t and 902454×10~8m~3 respectively;the geological understanding for these resources are relatively high,in which the proportion of prospective resources for oil and gas is 68.69%and 46.20%respectively;the geological understanding for conventional oil resources is generally higher than that of the conventional gas resources, which is consistent with the fact that oil has long been paid much more attention than gas in the past. The Bohai Bay basin onshore,Songliao basin,Ordos basin,Tarim basin,Junggar basin,Sichuan basin are the most abundant in undiscovered conventional oil and gas resources, have higher prospective resources Ⅰ proportion and higher geological understanding, and will be the key targets for future conventional oil and gas exploration; The Bohai Bay basin offshore,East China Sea basin,Qiong ES basin,Beibuwan basin,Zhujiangkou basin,Hailaer basin,Yingen basin,Santanghu basin and several others have higher prospective resources Ⅱ proportion, which are of relatively low geological understanding, and they will be the area for fundamental petroleum geology study.
