Petroleum System Analysis And Resource Assessment Of South Caspian Basin

The South Caspian Basin lies in the central Asia-Caspian sea area and it is an intermountain basin.With the guildance of the theories applied in Basin Analysis and Petroleum Geology and the approach of Petroleum System Analyisis,this study attempts to document basic geology,petroleum geology and hydrocarbon distribution,analyze petroleum systems and summarize the factors controlling hydrocarbon distribution as well as to characterize plays.Then,the hydrocarbon assessment of South Caspian Basin was conducted.In the South Caspian Basin,two petroleum systems:Maykop-Productive and Eocene-Eocene systems were developed.Petroleum is mostly distributed areally in five tectonic units and stratigraphically in six reservoir intervals.Quaternary tectonic movement,mud volcanism and overpressure are the main factors for hydrocarbon migration and enrichment.With the Monte Carlo simulation method,the undiscovered ressources were estimated to be 2.888 MMbbl of oil,30.82 Tcf of gas and 187.05 MMbbl of condensate,which are 12922.8 MMbbl of oil equivalent in total.The Productive/Red Bed play has a the greatest potential in the South Caspian Basin and its undiscovered oil and gas resoureces account for 94.6%of the total undiscovered resources in the basin.
