In this paper,precipitation types were classified as convective precipitation,mixed precipitation and stable precipitation by using raindrop size distribution data continuously observed by OTT Parsivel from 2016 to 2017.The statistical characteristics of raindrop size distribution data of the three precipitation types were analyzed.Using OTT Parsivel weather phenomena and the MRR data observed at the same station,5 precipitation events as snow,hail,heavy rain,medium rain and light rain were selected and the vertical microphysical characteristics of each event was analyzed.The main conclusions are:?1?OTT Parsivel,MRR and the automatic station are all able to observe the trend rainfall change within a process,and the rainfall observed by OTT Parsivel is highly correlated with the automatic station data,characterized by high temporal resolution and high accuracy.?2?The main precipitation type in Western Chongqing is stable precipitation.Mixed and convective precipitations are relatively small in number but contribute more to the amount of precipitation.Night rains are very frequent in this region,and the more frequent precipitation types at night are the convective and mixed rains.?3?The mean raindrop size distributions of the three precipitation types are all unimodal.The spectral width of convective precipitation is the largest of the three types and the stable precipitation has the smallest spectral width.The average diameter of convective precipitation is 2.09mm,the mixed precipitation is 1.32mm and the stable precipitation is 0.81mm.The diameter values of different particle peaks are 0.437mm,0.995mm,1.595mm,etc.,and the 0.437mm diameter peaks are the most frequent,occurring in all three types of precipitations.The mean particle number concentration of stable precipitation is 5.8*105mm-1m-3,with the maximum magnitude of 107.The mean particle number concentration is 1.7*105mm-1m-3,with the maximum magnitude of 106.The convective precipitation has the smallest mean particle number concentration of 7.4*104mm-1m-3,and the maximum magnitude is 105.?4?The MRR can be better applied to the detection of 0-3km of the vertical structure,and can be used for the analysis of stratospheric precipitation in stable weather.Its electromagnetic wave may be serious attenuated in strong weather.The MRR can well observe the melting layer the changes in the particle spectrum in it.Therefore,it can be used to understand in detail the characteristics of the microphysical changes of the clouds and the phase transitions of particles in the air,and is helpful to understand the rainfall mechanism.In the observation of snow,affected by different observation principles of instruments,the OTT Parsivel may over estimate the reflectivity factor and other physical quantities,while the MRR may underestimate the particle diameter.
