The ancient Chinese moss,including muscus,algae and other plants,has been widely used in all fields of human material life because of its high practical value.Due to its aesthetic value,it has been brought into the field of literature and art,and enriches cultural connotation.This paper systematically expounded the connotation of ancient Chinese mossy culture centered on Wang Xian's Moss Spectrum and other materials as well.The paper included introduction,three chapters and appendices.The introduction was an introduction to the present situation,research significance and research methods of this topic.The text was divided into three parts to study mossy culture from the material life,literary image,artistic application.The first chapter discussed moss and material life.The first section was about the name of moss,classifying and summing up the names of 79 species of moss listed in Moss Spectrum,and making a textual research on the confusion of some names,the error of names,the foreign things with the same name and the differences in classification between ancient and modern times.The second section was about the practical value of moss,including medicinal value,edible value,paper-making function,fragrance function and so on,in order to explain the important role of moss in the life of ancients.The second chapter discussed the image of moss in ancientliterature,and expounded the rich connotation of moss in the field of literature.The first section discussed the aesthetic connotation of moss image from two aspects: the beauty of form and color and the artistic conception of tranquility.The personality symbol meaning of moss image was discussed in the second section.In the process of appreciating moss,the literati deeply excavated the human virtue contained in it by virtue technique,so as to express their noble moral character,including plain and leisurely gentleman character,noble--minded and secluded hermit personality and ascetic and self-controlling literati style.The third section explored the emotional connotation of moss images by connecting the growth habits of moss itself and the psychology of ancient literati.Moss grown in different environments can resonate with different emotions of poets,including three aspects of the unrecognized talent,lovesickness and the sigh for pros--perity and decline.The third chapter introduced the application of moss in the field of ancient art.The moss landscape in traditional gardens was introduced in the first section,and the reasons why ancient gardens attached importance to moss were explained from two aspects of the ornamental value and spiritual connotation of moss.The second section introduced the method of moss dotpainting in traditional landscape painting from the aspects of the importance,the difficulty and the method of moss dot-painting.The appendix was the calibration note and supplement to the Moss Spectrum.
