In recent years,the construction of artificial islands for urban functions such as tourism and residence are increasing.The determination of the revetment elevation of the island is one of the important issues involved in the design of artificial islands.At present,the determination of the revetment elevation of artificial island is mainly according to the standards of ports,seawalls and other similar engineering standards and dominated by the allowable overtopping discharge,which usually leads to the problem that the elevation difference between the revetment crown and protected yard is too big.The research on the overtopping distance and post-overtopping processes can provide significant guidance on how to lower the revetment elevation by enhance the protection standard of the rear land.In order to study the overtopping phenomenon under extreme hydrodynamic conditions,especially the distance that the overtopping water travels through in the air,physical model tests on 18 conditions were performed on several armored rubble slopes with wave return walls.Overtopping discharge data is collected by weight method.By analyzing the overtopping discharge data,several calculation tools are used on the tested conditions to estimate the average overtopping discharge.Comparison are made between the measured and calculated overtopping discharge,providing a reference for other projects.This paper study the factors that affect overtopping distance by recording and analyzing the distances that water passed in the air in each overtopping process.The average values of the highest 1/N part of overtopping distances are chosen to characterize overtopping distances.Overtopping distances are influenced by the wave-breaking conditions,as discussed in this paper.The height difference between the crest of the wave return wall and the rear land increases the measured overtopping distance,as mentioned in the following parts.Based on the results of physical model tests on impulsive conditions,an empirical formula is given by fitting to describe the relations between the mean highest 1/10 part of overtopping distance and the average overtopping discharge.After trial calculation,the best value of (64)9)2)*in Andersen formula are found,making it possible to estimate the mean highest 1/N part of overtopping distance by Andersen formula.
