The sericulture and silk industry is a complete industrial chain including sericulture production, silk processing and satin printing, whose development is a process of continuous spatial evolution in the world. From both theoretical and empirical aspects,it is important to analyze the spatial evolution characteristics of the various sections in sericulture and silk industry and sum up the development rules, which will not only provide a strong explanation for the spatial layout of the sericulture and silk industry, but also provide effective reference for the sustainable development of the sericulture and silk industry.First, based on the factor difference and comparative advantage theory, this paper constructs a sequential spatial evolution model for vertically integrated industries, which includes raw materials, intermediates and final products.Second, based on the annual production data of sericulture, silk and cross-fabric(?50%),from the perspective of whole country, the three regions of east, central and west, and the main producing province, this paper compares the inter-regional and inter-provincial statistics. At last, this paper uses empirical models for the spatial evolution of the sericulture and silk industry. The findings are as follows:The theoretical model shows that there are different influencing factors in the spatial evolution of the various vertical integration industries. The main driving forces for the spatial evolution of raw materials production are the input of labor, land and other factors;the main factors in the spatial evolution of intermediate processing are the changes of raw materials, transportation, labor and capital;and the final production manufacturing spatial evolution is closely related to technological innovation and technological talents. The descriptive statistical analysis shows that the sericulture and silk industry of each link shows a gradual evolution since the 1990s.The phenomena shows that Chinese sericulture production and silk processing have evolved from eastern to central and western regions one after another, while the spatial distribution of satin production has been relatively stable, which has resulted in the separation of raw materials and silk processing in the central and western regions and satin processing in eastern region. The empirical result of the econometric model shows that the spatial evolution of sericulture production is positively related to the amount of seed production, the area of mulberry, and negatively correlated with rural per capita income. The evolution of silk processing is positively related to fixed assets in the textile industry, the national share of grade highway mileage and the sericulture production, and negatively correlated with GDP per capita. The spatial evolution of satin production is positively correlated with silk production, fixed assets in the textile industry, the number of secondary vocational education and R&D input in the textile industry.According to the above conclusions,Chinese sericulture and silk industry should stabilize the production scale of sericulture and strengthen the foundation for industrial development;accelerate the integration of regional industry chains and promote the upgrading of industries;strengthen technological innovation and increase production efficiency and benefit.
