Research On International Project Manager's Leadership Competency Model

Project managers,who lead project team to implement project construction,plays key role in construction team.Therefore,the leadership of project manager directly or indirectly influences project performance.Specially,international projects ask project team conduct construction abroad,which result in more uncertainty and less resource supports.As a consequence,international projects require stronger leadership of project manager.To address this problem,this study focuses on the leadership of international project managers.Firstly,this study employed critical incident method to find out important leadership competency of international project managers on the basis of literature review,analysis of international projects and job analysis of project managers.And the factor analysis was used to classify those leadership traits into three aspects,including personal traits,management skills and basic knowledge.As a result of EFA,the international managers' leadership competency model was constructed,which contain three aspects and 20 leadership competencies.Based on this,a large group decision-making model based on decision-makers' preference was employed to conduct quantitative analysis of relative importance of international project leadership competencies.The result indicated that there are different weights among personal traits,management skills and basic knowledge.Management skills is most important,followed by personal qualities,the last is the basic knowledge.This study enriches project leadership theory in China and provides reference for international engineering project manager's selection and training.
