Study On The Condition And Problems Of The Insertion Of Suzhou Typical Companies Into Global Value Chain

In the past 20 years,the international trade of Suzhou has been developing rapidly.Suzhou has become a stereotype of China no matter in the aspect of trade volume,diversity or geographic position.On the List of Top 100 Trade Cities(2016)issued by General Administration of Customs,Suzhou ranked the second place.Suzhou has various industries,the largest number of development zones,and convenient transportation.This article takes the approach of global value chain(GVC)to study the condition and problems of the GVC insertion of Suzhou typical companies by means of annual report analysis and phone interviews,in order to enrich the study on the GVC condition of the specific industry or cities.This article firstly summarized the definition,significance and approaches of GVC-related study,GVC insertion patterns and conditions.Next,on the industry level,the GVC Position Index of Suzhou textile,chemical engineering,and electromechanical industry are calculated,90 listed companies are categorized into different links of the GVC,the condition and trend of industrial operation performances are measured by profitability,efficiency and capital structure.Then,on the company level,typical companies are picked according to different company categories and studied from strategic and operational aspects.The GVC insertion condition of the three industries are summarized as follows.The textile industry is led by a few famous brands,based on a variety of specialized manufacturers and supported by several comprehensive service producers.The electromechanical industry is generated by technology followers and accompanied by several innovators.Chemical engineering industry plays its role mainly as a supporter of textile industry and shows no clear distinction.The prominent problems facing the three industries are:weak ability in resource integration in textile,low capacity and bad export performance in chemical engineering,lack of innovative motivation in electromechanical industry.
