Leadership style and leadership behavior has always been a hot research topic in the field of management and organizational behavior.Any kind of leadership behavior is embedded in the context of its culture,the effectiveness of a leadership behavior must be combined with its cultural background.As a unique style of leadership in China,differential leadership takes more care of their favorite subordinate,reflecting the unique interaction between leaders and subordinates in organizations of China,which is emphasis on relationship.Based on the differential mode of association and the manageming practice of Chinese,understanding the psychology and the influencement course of differential leadership is of great significance.There are few studies about differential leadership,especially on the impact of differential leadership on innovative behavior were investigated.So the purpose of this study is to explore the mechanism how differential leadership affect on employee innovative behavior,mediated by job engagement under the circumstance of leader’s innovative expectation.This paper firstly sorted out the existing literature of differential leadership,job engagement,innovative behavior,leader’s innovative expectation,and formed the research framework based on the differential mode of association,social exchange theory,role theory and social learning theory.Secondly,this paper focused on the mechanism of how differential leadership affected on employee innovative behavior,the mediation of job engagement and the moderation of leader’s innovative expectation.And then we put forward the hypotheses and research model.Thirdly,this paper obtained the formal questionnaire through compiling and modifying the questionnaire,exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis.Finally,the tests of the reliability,validity,variance,correlation and hierarchical regression had been used to validate the hypotheses.Research result shows that various individual and enterprise factors differently affect on differential leadership,job engagement,innovative behavior,leader’s innovative expectation.Differential leadership has significantly positive effect on innovative behavior,job engagement partially mediates the influences between differential leadership on innovative behavior.Leader’s innovative expectation has a moderating effect on job engagement and innovative behavior,which strengthens the positive effect of differential leadership on innovative behavior.Finally,according to the results of empirical research,the paper puts forward several managerial suggestions in emphasizing the appropriate method of differential leadership,focusing on improving job engagement to employees and raising leader’s innovative expectation.
