Historical districts witness the rapid development of urbanization,which gives the fabric and social structure new challenges.The protection of historical districts has become a consensus of the whole society.As an integral part of historical district,the function is an important factor to retain vitality.Therefore,the way to deal with the function of historical districts gradually draws more and more attention.Gaodijie historical district is located in the center of Guangzhou old city,where the conflicts between the wholesale market and outstanding values of historical heritages happen every day.By studying this typical case,the thesis intends to give strategies to the protection of historical districts and the renovation of its current industry,and provide guidance to similar issues.The thesis firstly focuses on related theories and cases to guide Gaodijie's renovation.Based on literature survey,field research and interviews of local people,the thesis summarizes the outstanding values of Gaodijie and the problems caused by its industry,to show the necessity and urgency of renovation.Then by analyzing materials related to Gaodijie's wholesale market,the thesis talks about historical factors to shape the industry and its macro trends.From the study of wholesale market's business models and spatial organization,the thesis tries to figure out the feasibility and operability of renovation.At last,suggestions and strategies are given.As the research shows,Gaodijie is the witness of Guangzhou's thousand-year-long history as a commercial metropolis,and is full of strong commercial culture.Its historical location is significant,and the alleys and houses still have unique characteristics.However,the wholesale market brings about lots of problems in land use,historical scenes,heritage protection,social structure and infrastructure.Moreover,the economic benefit of the wholesale market has begun to drop,and the industry has some new trends,such as spreading to manufacturing and retailing,separating business distribution from goods distribution,using e-business platform and generating design and creative industry.The wholesale market shows the cluster of commercial immigration,the space adaptability of commercial activities,and the economic benefit factors to influence the development,which could inspire suggestions given to Gaodijie.In the aspect of industrial renovation,Gaodijie should gradually remove warehouses within the district,and replace wholesaling by new functions.In the aspect of spatial planning,Gaodijie would form a spatial structure with three functional axis,five theme zones and several points of open space,and become a district that continues its historical commercial culture,recovers the water town landscape,and displays its revolutionary heritage of modern times.
