A Study On The Export Strategies Of Korean Processed Food To The Chinese Market

The Korea-China FTA has been concluded as of November 10,2014.Before the FTA negotiation,the biggest part of resisting power of export is very weak agriculture with price competitiveness in the Korean domestic industry.In contrast,processed foods of Korea have started to gain popularity with the recent flow of 'Korean wave' in China.Chinese foods using cheap labor and absolute advantage of supply took over the food market of Korea.In contrast,Korean products started taking prominence in the processed food market for foods requiring processing technologies and marketing strategies.In reflection of this situation,the present study attempted to seek ways that the processed foods of Korea can more actively enter the Chinese market after the Korea-China FTA was signed.First,the present study attempted to analyze the import and export status of processed food of Korea and China and the export competitiveness against China.For analysis of export competitiveness,TSI and RCA indexes were used.The analysis found that most of the processed foods group did not have a clear predominance of export competitiveness against China.These results support the need for the present study.Next,the present study reviewed the clauses of processed foods related to the Korea-China FTA and changes in the trade environment of processed food in Korea.Through the Korea-China FTA,most tariffs on processed food items were immediately abolished or gradually abolished over a period of 5 to 20 years.Corresponding to these changes of the trade environment,the various strategies which can promote the export of processed foods were explored.Finally,through analysis of processed food exports in the international market and Korean processed food exports in the Chinese market,breakthroughs were made regarding future development strategies for exporting Korean processed food to China.Recommendations for the export of Korean processed foods to China are discussed,both from the aspect of the processed food industry and at the national level.From the aspect of the processed food industry,the focus should be on development of high-end brands of processed foods,the sales techniques of Korean traditional sauces and health foods should also be further researched.In order to reduce the export of imitation products,awareness regarding protection of intellectual property rights needs to be increased,and the monitoring of imitation products in the Chinese market needs to be strengthened.From the national level perspective,cooperation for the abolition of non-tariff barriers needs to be enhanced,and the geographical proximity of China needs to be exploited,by importing low-price raw materials from China,then exporting the final product after processing.This study proposed some ways to promote the export of Korean proceeded food toward Chinese markets.It is expected that the tasks and ways proposed in this study will contribute in transforming Korean agricultural food into industry's high value-added industry and the export industrialization.However,as this study limited its research target scope to the proceeded food,so it could not suggest any way to promote the export of fresh food directly leading to Korean,domestic agriculture and fishery industries.Besides,this study also proposed the way that cheap,raw food materials are exported from China and then are exported to Chinese markets after transforming them into processed edible products as a way to promote the export of Korean proceeded food to Chinese markets.Following this strategy may be more distant from the development of domestic agriculture and fishery industries in Korea.However,this study judged that,on the one hand,if strategy would promote the export of Korean processed food and the trade volume toward Chinese markets in the whole export of Korean food,then it might be possible to increase the export amount of Korean fresh food.Therefore,this study intends to provide ways to promote the export of Korean fresh farm products as well as processed food as a research task in future.
