Wireless Body Area Network(WBAN)is a wireless communication system that centers on the human body, and it consists of a coordinator and some nodes which are low-power,micro,intelligent.The WBAN has important applications in many areas, such as medical monitoring, motion detection, etc. However, the nodes of the WBAN are usually miniaturized, and their battery capacity are very limited. As a result, the energy harvesting technology has emerged as a promising technology that allows the nodes in the WBAN have a longer lifetime by collecting energy from the surrounding environment. However, due to the stochastic of the energy harvesting process and the influence of the shadowing effect of the wireless channel in WBAN,how to involve the energy harvesting technology in WBAN and ensure the effective transmission of data as well as the different service quality requirements simultaneously is still a serious problem. In order to improve the performance of WBAN based on energy harvesting technology, this thesis focuses on analyzing and designing the MAC(Media Access Control)protocol by the characteristics of energy harvesting and WBAN.(1)A relative system model is built, which includes energy arrival model, node model, etc.,and the MAC protocol is analyzed under the condition of energy harvesting based on the system model. We mainly focus on the analysis of CSMA/CA(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance)based on energy harvesting technol-ogy.According to the process of energy arrival and MAC protocol, the corresponding Markov chain analysis model is built. Moreover, the steady state probability of the sys-tem is analyzed, and the long term performance including throughput and energy con-sumption is then derived based on the statistical characteristics of the analytical model. After comparing the simulation results and theanalytical results, the accuracy of the analytical model is verified.(2)To further consider the characteristics of WBAN and the energy harvesting technology,we found that the CSMA/CA protocol above-mentioned cannot adapt to WBAN well, which is due to the dynamic link characteristics, the heterogeneity of the nodes in WBAN and the randomness of energy harvesting. Then,a hybrid MAC pro-tocol is designed,in which the TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access)protocol is added to the previous protocol. The goal of designing the hybrid MAC is to improve the performance of WBAN based on energy harvesting technology and ensure the dif-ferent service requirements of different data. The simulation results show that the de-signed MAC protocol can improve the throughput of the network compared with the non-designed MAC protocol, and it meets the different transmission requirements of the data with different priorities.
