Independence refers to the ability to rely on oneself to accomplish something without asking for help from others,and to be able to act on your own initiative to show restraints against behavioral and personality qualities that do not conform to social norms,including self-reliance,self-assertion,and self-control.The existing literature mostly focus on infants,adolescents,and undergraduates,with much less attention on the elementary school stage.Nevertheless,early school age is exactly the stage of adaptation for the transformation of children's identity,and it is still an important period for independent development.Therefore,this paper uses the early school-age children as the research subjects,to investigate the status of independence from the three dimensions of independence,and selects the family factor for the independence development analysis.This article uses questionnaires and interviews to investigate the parents of the 637 primary and secondary students in the three schools in Linyi County,Shandong Province.The survey tools are the self-conducted questionnaire on the independence and family education status for the early school-age children.This paper finds that children's independence in the early years of school age are better overall,but not balanced in three dimensions.Specifically,self-control development is better,compared to self-reliance and self-assertion development.Moreover,there is significant gender difference in the independence status,it also has the significant difference among different grades.It shows that each dimension of independence from grade one to grade two develops fast,and slows down from grade two to grade three.In addition,due to differences in parents' age and education as well as the family structure,the independence developments of children in the early school age are different.Overall,independence of children with high age and highly educated parents,and core family structure in the early childhood performs the best.According to the survey results,this paper analyzes the influence of the misunderstanding of the family educational ideas and methods on the development of independence consciousness and capability for children in the early school age.In the end,this paper provides the corresponding educational suggestions from family,school and society,according to the analysis of the independence of the children in the early school age and the influence of the family.
