As an important field of human capital investment,education is also the basic field for developing science and technology and cultivating talents.Due to the current exam--oriented education,the education system attaches great importance to the academic performance of students,ignoring the coordinated development of other aspects of students,resulting in students' body and mind failing be comprehensively developed.While the junior high school students are in an accelerated and transitional individual development period.Due to unbalance between physiological changes and psychological development,individuals are easily subject to mental health problems.If psychological health problems of junior high school students fail to get timely attention and be effectively resolved,It is bound to affect the academic performance level of junior high school students and influence the formation and development of health the psychological quality of junior high school students and psychological problems and mental illness may arise in serious cases,which fundamentally is not conducive to physical and mental coordination and long-term development of junior high school students.Based on the above research background,this study aims at the exploring of condition of mental health and the factors of mental health status of junior high school students in rural areas,analyzing the correlation between the mental health and students'academic performance level,so as to provide the corresponding countermeasures and suggestions for solving junior middle school students mental health problems in rural areas.Concerning methods and tools selection,this research uses stratified sampling method and selected 9250 junior middle school students from rural areas.This research used the mental health test(MHT)to measure mental health status of junior high school students and used standardized math test paper to measure junior high school students'academic performance situation.The rural area junior middle school students questionnaire was also used to gather basic information and all the data were analyzed through STATA13.0 statistical software.Descriptive statistical analysis and OLS regression analysis method were used as statistical methods.The results of this study are as follows:(1)Most of the current junior middle school students in rural areas in China have mental health problem and they need to be given a certain degree of attention.56.34%of rural junior middle school students are in the middle or above the psychological anxiety level and 71.97%of them have different types of mental health problems.Among the mental health problems,the first is the learning anxiety(4979,63.68%),followed by physical symptoms(1611,20.60%),then is the self-accusation(1433,18.33%),allergic tendency(1247,15.95%),fear tendency(781,9.99%),social anxiety(626,8.01%),impulsive tendency(284,3.63%)and the problem of loneliness tendency(177,2.26%).(2)Boys are better than girls in mental health status.No significant gender differences in loneliness tendency were detected but there are significant gender differences in the rest subscales;The total scale scores show that grade seven junior high school students are better than the grade eight ones in learning anxiety,social anxiety,allergic tendency,physical symptoms,impulse tendency but the grade eight ones are better than the grade seven ones in the fear of the tendency.Grade differences were significant in the above aspects;In learning anxiety and fear tendency aspect,students will be better if their mother's education level is above junior high school than the ones whose mother's education level is under junior high school and the difference is significant;Apart from self-accusation tendency and impulsive tendency,students'mental health is better if the father's education level is above junior middle school than the ones whose father's education level is under junior high school and the difference between them was also significant;In loneliness tendency,allergic tendency and impulsive tendency aspect,non-single parent family students' mental health is better than who the single parent family ones and the difference between them was significant;The psychological health level of only children in learning anxiety,social anxiety,fear tendency,self-accusation tendency and the full score is better than non-only children and the difference in the above five aspects are significant;Apart from learning anxiety and self-accusation,Non-boarding students' mental health is better than that of the boarders and the difference between them was significant.(3)There is a positive correlation between mental health and academic performance of junior middle school students in rural areas.Good mental health status is beneficial to students' academic performance.Learning anxiety tendency(?=-0.026),social anxiety(?=-0.018),loneliness tendency(?=-0.043),physical symptoms(?=-0.016),fear tendency(?=-0.015),overall scale score(?=-0.004)are negatively related to academic performance of rural junior high school students.Based on the above findings,this study puts forward the following suggestions:first,to start from understanding himself and establish a reasonable and healthy way of life;secondly,parents should have smooth communication with their children and strive to create a good family atmosphere;thirdly,to strengthen the school mental health education and improve school teaching environment;finally,to create a good social culture atmosphere and create a harmonious and stable social environment.
