The Educational Magazine was born in the period of the Republic of China,which was at the turning point of China's social transformation and cultural reform.Its editors were best-know public figures at that time whose social influences contribute to its status as the most influential educational magazine. It was supported by the Commercial Press, which brought it quality resources and national publication.Among the articles published on the magazine, articles related to higher education play an important role, including higher education systems at home and abroad,student movements, and study abroad. Through analyzing articles on higher education,it has been found out that the authors are editors, headmasters of universities, and scholars. This finding proves that the Magazine is an authority among the educational magazines at that time.Among the articles on higher education, those about higher education at home are the most. The Magazine gave an objective and detailed introduction of the foundlings of some institutes, universities, and private schools, in regard to the early years of the Republic of China witnessed the rapid development of higher education.After those schools were founded, rules and regulations were needed to guarantee their smooth running. The Magazine publicized some articles on educational systems,which led to discussions on educational systems, and therefore encouraged the improvement of the systems. However, the Magazine mostly only publicized rules and regulations of higher education without its own opinions. There was only one article expressed its worries about the rules and regulations. The Magazine also publicized articles which combined financial situations of some regions and higher-education institutes with facts of the institutes, so that to reveal the importance of funds on the development of higher education institutes. The Magazine also introduced students' daily activities, especially sports activities, from which people can catch a glimpse of the school life at that time.Student movement is one feature of the educational field during the early years of the Republic of China. More than ten articles publicized on the Magazine gave a detailed introduction of the causes for and processes of the student movements. From these articles, we can find out that student movements at that time were characterized by high frequency, large scale, and great influence. Also, these articles are important materials for analyzing the student movements.The Magazine stands out with its focus on introducing foreign higher education,including facts about higher education of Britain, United States, and Germany. And facts on the U.S. are the most. These articles are mainly about the scale and funds of higher education outbound. They also contain academic trends abroad, a window for people to get to know what happened abroad.There were a dramatically increasing number of students studying abroad during the period the Republic of China. From the views of the Magazine, it can be concluded that the primary destinations for students study abroad are the U.S., Europe,and Japan. Regulations and systems about study abroad gradually improved. Looking back, we can clearly see that students who had studied abroad have made their contributions to the country in terms of science and technology development.The development of Chinese higher education should be discussed and studied with materials like The Educational Magazine, so that to make Chinese higher education even stronger.
