Abstract/Summary:
David Harvey is the most influential neo-Marxist in the contemporary western. What he never gave up is the pursuit of Marxism and another better world.Harvey is committed to put Marxism theory into current social practice guidance, and should always remain utopia, and build a new world based on the reality of change.First of all,it is important to trace back to its academic theory in the study of Harvey’s utopia.Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’ s critical view of social space and their attitudes toward utopia,as well as Lenin’s research on imperialism laid the foundation for Harvey’s real criticism;Henri Lefebvre,Michel Foucault,Anthony Giddens and other Western Marxist’s space theories help Harvey construct the external framework of utopia.Ernst Bloch,Jane Jacobs,Roberto Unger,Robert Park and others’ Utopia thoughts and social theories provides a direct principle and detailed description for the part of Harvey’s utopian vision. After summarizing the thought source of Harvey’s utopian thought, this paper centers on "the space of hope",and analyzes the main contents of his utopian thought.Firstly, discuss the two kinds of utopia that Harvey sums up in theory and practice. Then on the basis of summary of Harvey’s theory of dialectical Utopia, which discusses the reasons, realization routes, the specific issues of design and so on for Harvey’s dialectical utopia. Finally, through the particular example – the summary of Edilia, refines the specific style and characteristics of Harvey’s utopia. At the end,the first part affirms the significance of Harvey’s utopian thought in theory and reality, and thinks about the current social construction and the long-term development of human beings.Secondly,it analyzes its limitations from two aspects: theoretical evolution and practical operation.Throughout Harvey’s academic path,he has always endeavored to combine utopia with Marxism to develop a thought that is both realistic and energetic and not completely divorced from reality.Although Harvey’s dialectical utopia in the process of specific design still shows the intention to shelve the time and space of the compromise, but he still gives us an inexhaustible wealth of thought through his efforts in breaking through utopia and striving for open society.
