From The Pastoral Cottage To The Garden House—the Study Of The Modern Shanghai Dongping Road Block (1913-1949)

The essence of city is life,and the essence of city is culture.A street is also a history,bearing the city's history and culture.Dongping Road is an inconspicuous road in Xuhui District of Shanghai.It is only 400 meters long and 11.5 to 12.4 meters wide.It was built in 1913.The road is East-West direction,east to Yueyang Road,west to Urumqi Road,and Hengshan Road intersected.Formerly known as Francis Garnier Road,one of the products of the French concession in Shanghai cross-border road,and the senior residential district located in the concession Bureau careful planning.Here the environment elegant,exquisite and distinctive villa.Based on the original documents,official documents,government communique,books and periodicals,and household registration files,this paper takes the Dongping Road in Shanghai as the research object,focusing on the three aspects of road building,building and humanities.First of all,under the background of the expansion of French concession and the urbanization of modern Shanghai,the background of the building of dongping road and the road construction process are studied,and how to transform dongping road from a rural cottage to a modern neighborhood is analyzed.Secondly,the causes of the "garden house" block in dongping road are analyzed,and the early property owners and architectural features on both sides of the road are sorted out.Finally,the paper analyzes the changes of neighborhood residents in the period of French Concession,the period of Anti-Japanese War and the eve of liberation.Based on the interpretation of Dongping Road in time and space,this paper examines the historical and cultural characteristics of Dongping Road block and its causes.As a century-old block,Dongping Road has valuable historical value in the form of block and architecture,and is the place to show the social life of modern elegant block,with rich cultural connotation.In the specific research,we pay attention to the combination of microcosmic history and urban history,and discuss the interaction between historical change and urban interior.The author does not seek to establish a typical representative of the Western area of the French concession in Shanghai,but to clarify the historical facts and provide a sample and related cognition.At the same time,we hope to explore the historical style of Dongping Road and promote its inheritance and development.
