A Study Of The Image Of The Garden In Upon Appleton House By Marvell

Andrew Marvell is an important poet in the English Metaphysics,his poetry not only reflect the feature of the English Metaphysics Poetry in the seventeenth century,but also elegance of the Classicism.As a transitional poet from the late Renaissance to the Neoclassicism,Andrew Marvell play an important role in the development of English poetry.The garden is a common image in the Renaissance literature.The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the complexity and rich background meaning of the image of garden in Upon Appleton House,so as to analyze the perception of Marvell’s opinion of politics,nature and cosmology in the poem.The thesis is divided into three parts.The first part explores the metaphor of the real garden in the poem,it can be analyzed through two aspects:the metaphor of the garden and the present military situation,the metaphor of the garden and the state;The second part links women to the garden to discuss the relationship between Mary and the garden in poetry.Garden belongs to the world of plant,then,by analyzing the relationship between women and garden,we also can explore Marvell’s thinking of man and nature,and his view of nature from his poem.The third part analyzes the content of the specific poems then we know that Marvell’s regards the Appleton House as a stealthy garden.Meanwhile,this thesis discusses Marvell’s view of cosmology through the imageries of the circle and the chain of being.
