| Narcissism means an exaggerated and fragile self-view,a strong sense of privilege,a desire for success,and a demand that being the focus of crowds.As a complex personality trait or state,narcissism can affect individuals’ thoughts,feelings and behaviors.Narcissism means an exaggerated and fragile self-view,a strong sense of privilege,a desire for success,and a demand that being the focus of crowds.As a complex personality trait or state,narcissism can affect individuals’ thoughts,feelings and behaviors.Researchers have found that the younger generation is becoming more and more narcissistic.Whether the teenagers’ narcissism would be higher with their strong self-consciousness is a question.Besides,the prosocial behavior is an important part of individual socialization which refers to the all behaviors good for others.As we all know,narcissism means self-centered,and whether they would produce prosocial behaviors is still a question.To understand the relationship between teenagers’ narcissism and prosocial behaviors,and the influence of different situations.The current study carries out two sub-studies.The first study examined the characteristics of the two kinds of narcissism and their relationships with different kinds of prosocial tendencies via the Narcissism Personality Inventory(NPI),Communal Narcissism Inventory and prosocial Tendencies Measure.All the participants(boy 341,girl 375)are from 8 grade of a junior high school in Suzhou.The results showed that:(1)The gender difference of the two kinds of narcissism was significant,boys are more narcissistic than girl;the birth-place difference of the agentic narcissism was significant,the teenagers lived in city are more agentic narcissistic than the teenagers lived in country;the higher of teenagers’ father’s education level,the higher agentic narcissism score they have.(2)The correlations between the agentic narcissism and the public,compliant,emotional and urgent prosocial tendencies were significant and positive but weak.And the correlations between the communal narcissism and all the kinds of prosocial tendencies were moderate significant and positive.(3)The higher of the agentic narcissism,the lower of the anonymous prosocial tendency level;however,the higher of the communal narcissism,the higher of the anonymous and public prosocial tendency level.The second study examined the different types of narcissist’s prosocial behavior and the role of context via virtual helping scene created by E-prime.After the experiment,we used a questionnaire to investigate the reason why they help others or not.The participants were chosen from study 1,including 108 teenagers(boy 50,girl 58).Results showed that:(1)The difference of two kinds of narcissists’ prosocial behavior was significant,communal narcissists had more prosocial behaviors than agentic narcissists;(2)The relation between narcissism and prosocial behavior was moderated by the context.In the public situation,all the narcissists helped others,however,in the anonymous situation,the communal narcissists had more prosocial behaviors than agentic narcissists.(3)Narcissists tended to attribute the reasons for implementing prosocial behavior to communal characteristics,such as generosity,kindness,willingness to help others,etc.,but the reasons for not implementing prosocial behavior were attributed to the agentic traits,such as lack of ability. |
