Semantic Analysis And Interface Research Of Modern Chinese Negative Phenomena

As an important character of language,redundancy is concerned by more and more linguistics for it violates the principle of economy of language but always exists in language using. The redundant negation in which negative marker losing its semantic value also became one of this study. There are many scholars discussed the generative mechanism and pragmatic value etc. from the semantic, syntactic or pragmatic perspectives. Based on the annotated corpus, this thesis induced the semantic structure model of every format and revealed the semantic and syntactic restriction of the structure behind the different kind of core component through the analysis of 20 kinds of common redundant negation formats. This thesis also discussed the redundant negation phenomenon from surface of semantics and pragmatics.First, according to the lexical semantic feature tagging set (Li baojia, Sun daogong 2011), this thesis builds a new classification system which based on the core component's semantic categories of the general format "Y(core component)+X(redundant negative word)+VP". Under this classification system,this thesis summed up the semantic structure model of the 20 kinds of common redundant negation formats and revealed the semantic and syntactic restriction of the structure behind the different kind of core component, in which 19 kinds of formats can have a verbal positive structure behind the core component. What's more,the degree category also can have descriptive nominal structure. Besides, the semantic restrictions of the same category of core component have consistency. For example,the declarative redundant negative formats are restricted by three semantic features which are intentions, happened and under control or not. There also have little distinctions in the same category.Secondly, this thesis revealed six reasons why the redundant negation phenomenon exists based on the semantic structure analysis. They are inner negation's spill, external negation reappearing, lexical modal meaning reappearing,highlight the subjective marker, construction evolution and clauses' mixture. The reason for "inner negation's spill" is the most popular reason,which include 10 formats. And the reason "external negation reappearing" and "lexical modal meaning reappearing" occupied 2 formats and 3 formats. According to the study,these three kinds of reasons are consistent actually; they all expressed the restriction from the semantic bottom. Otherwise another three kinds of reasons are minority. They show the evolution of language using and the performance of pragmatics.Lastly, this thesis discussed the pragmatic value of redundant negation phenomenon from three perspectives which are highlight the speaker's subjectivity,increase the vividness of the language and more suitable for Chinese language. In addition, we also try to discuss the surface between semantics and pragmatics of redundant negation phenomenon. This thesis revealed some core components can be presupposition triggers and provide exterior semantic clue which can motivate background information when listener hearing the core components. Through this process the listeners can react correctly to the structure's meaning that after the core component.This thesis chose 20 kinds of common redundant negative formats from modern Chinese as objects of the study, and the annotation of corpus was through manual work, all these elements may lead to some errors. At the same time, we only study the surface between semantics and pragmatics in redundant negation phenomenon at the first attempt. So all these questions need be studied by other scholars in the future.
