This paper combines with the specific characters examples, trying to use the theory of Chinese semiotics to explain the evolution,characteristics, types and relations of folk characters.The paper is divided into five parts.The introduction part expounds the significance of the topic and the research status. The first chapter introduces the origin and content of the theory of Chinese characters semiotics,which the after analysis mainly come from. The second and the third chapter are the main body of the thesis. The second chapter redefines folk characters from the perspective of semiotics.Put forward that folk characters are symbols that have the different signified and the same signified with standard form of Chinese characters. Folk characters and standard characters are isomeric,exactly different variants of the same Chinese character symbol.Then,explain the "shift" phenomenon of folk characters and standard characters.Thinking that folk characters and standard characters are in dialogic mechanism,which accept responsive understanding from expositor.The third chapter discusses the encoding,circulation and characteristics of folk character symbols.Folk characters are products of complex encoding and simplified encoding,combining with uncertainty in circulation process.They have characteristics of temporal spirit, regionality and unmarkedness.At the same time, they are the unity of arbitrariness and motivation, the unity of adapting Chinese and intervening Chinese.Contrast to Peirce’s "three points method",folk characters can be divided into image iconicity, structure iconicity and theme iconicity.The fourth chapter proves that new words on the network are not equal to folk characters. And analyses the function of the folk characters symbols from structure and expression. Folk characters not only have positive source function,aesthetic function and metaphor function,but also have negative hiding function.What’s more,the social cultural function and information processing function are weaker.Compared with the standard characters,folk characters are at a disadvantage in the symbolic function.Isomeric orthographic and folk characters are two kinds of interactive power of self reconstruction inside the system of Chinese.We should analyses folk characters objectively.Accepting,specifying and identifying those "reasonable" bedeutsamkeit folk characters,and eliminating those "irrational" structural folk characters.It has positive guiding significance for modern Chinese characters standardization.
