A Survey Of Chinese And Thai Students' Learning Strategies

From the perspective of learning strategies, we focus our attention on the study of Chinese characters learning strategies. By studying the related historical researches, we develop a Chinese characters learning strategy scale and take a questionnaire survey among Chinese students and Thai students. Through the use of SPSS22.0, we explore the Chinese learning strategies used by them, and then discuss the influence of gender factor,different Chinese levels and different cultural backgrounds on Chinese characters learning strategies. Depending on the situation, we further inspect the similarities and differences between Chinese and Thai students' characters learning situation and the present existed problems.We found that Chinese and Thai students identify most highly with method concept and identify less with discrepancy concept. At the same time,Chinese and Thai students use the self-monitoring strategy more frequently. As for the Chinese character learning strategies,The students of the two countries are similar in stroke strategy,font strategy,review strategy and social strategy. However,there are big differences between Chinese students and Thai students. Thai students have a clearer idea of Chinese characters,especially in the difficulty concept .But Chinese students use management strategy more frequently. The students of this two countries achieved significant difference between in the following aspects: memory strategy, stroke strategy, phonetic strategy, induction strategy, review strategy, application strategy, mother tongue strategy and guessing strategy. During the learning process, Mother tongue and social strategy are the most frequently used by Thai students . Induction and application strategy are the least frequently used by Thai students. On the other hand, Chinese students use application and induction strategy most commonly, while review and font strategy were the least used.We also found that gender factor has certain influence on Chinese characters learning strategies. It shows that girls and boys achieved significant difference between in four aspects: difficulty concept, planning strategy, induction strategy and application strategy. The students of different levels also achieved significant difference between in the following aspects: method concept, monitoring strategy, memory strategy, stroke strategy, phonetic strategy, font strategy, review strategy, mother tongue strategy,guessing strategy and social strategy. According to cultural dimension theory,we surveyed and compared to the use of Chinese characters learning strategies between Chinese and Thai students. We combined methods of quantitative and qualitative study.At the same time, we made a case study. Based on an analysis of the research results, we advanced some suggestions for the promotion of Chinese characters teaching and strategies training.
