Research On The Organic Holism Of The New Criticism

As one of the three major schools of Formalism,the New Criticism has always been regarded as a literary school that emphasizes on literary form and literary autonomy view.However,the New Criticism is also a unique type of Formalism.Unlike other Formalism,the New Criticism puts forward the organic poetic view,and regards literary works as an organic whole which is autonomous,whose structure follows the law of the "unity of opposites" and produces meaning itself.On the one hand,it stresses that works are independent of the external world and exists alone,on the other hand it also focus on exploring the complex structure inside the work.The concepts of "literary autonomyt","organic wholet" and "unity of opposites" constitute a closely and meaningful system with a certain structural level.This system not only highlights the pure literary ontology of the New Criticism,but also shines with the beauty of aesthetic modernity,with profound complexity and contradiction.Therefore,there are two main goals in this paper.Firstly,it systematically combs and summarizes the organic poetic view of the New Criticism,then explores the organic whole thought embodied in the practice of the New Criticism and studies its rewriting and development of the traditional organic theory.Secondly,it reflects and criticizes the organic poetic view of the New Criticism in the perspective of aesthetic modernity,to prove that as a Textualism genre,the New criticism is not a Formalism that simply emphasizes the text form,but is a unique literary theory with profound contradiction and complexity under the influence of modernity.The concepts in the organic poetic view such as "organic whole" and "unity of opposites" are full of contradictions and paradoxes,but through the reconstruction of an independent and self-contained art world to achieve the confrontation of alienation of the real world,indicating that the new criticism does not give up the social function of the theory,therefore,it can not cover up the outstanding contribution made by the New Criticism in the history of Western Literary Theory.
