Giuseppe Arcomboldo,an artist from Milan in renaissance. If like Mozart,Arcimboldo had died at the age of thirty-five,he would be of little interest for us today. What he had accomplished would probably have remained merely a footnote in the history of art.It was only at the imperial court, where he went in 1562,that he started his wonderful art career.Arcimboldo's accomplishments in art are due to his position as a court artist, and I present many breakthrough and innovative arguments to prove it along the dissertation. There are 3 chapters in the dissertation to explain how Arcimboldo as a court artist have a close and deep connection with Humanism through learning, representing and spreading humanism. Before becoming a court artist,Arcimboldo received some training from humanists, and had a lot classic study. When he was in Milan, the cathedrals commissioned him paintings.Later in Hapsburg, patrons—Maximilian II and Rudolf II created a great art and culture environment under religious tolerances, natural discovery and art incitement, which gave Arcimboldo the chance to deepen the contact with humanism, huge influence in his artworks.Arcimboldo's masterpieces---Elements and Seasons represent humanism deeply. This dissertation will talk about secularism by looking at political allegories, natural studies, and classic sources,to demonstrate my views. As a court artist,Arcimboldo was an encyclopedic talent, who not only good at painting, but also at designing tournaments and festivals. In all these events,Arcimboldo designed the clothes, execution process, temporary building structures design, which spread the humanism. When he helped Rudolf II on his kunstkammer by collecting unique and eccentric items, managing the collection and the way to display them, following a pursuit of humanism-advocating human values, discovering nature.Without the position as a court artist,Acimboldo might have had not such great achievement in art.Humanism shaped Acimboldo in the great figure of an artist and humanist in art history.
