On The View Of Nature In Foster's Short Stories

Edward Morgan Forster(1879-1970)is one of the greatest novelists in England in 20 th century.Forster’s novels have won him a reputation in literature.At the same time his short stories have been one distinguished scenery in the history of modern short stories,with its bold but meaningful expression,offbeat interesting themes,unconstrained imagination and the framework of classical myth elements.And his short stories are also different from the creation of the novels because of the short and pithy form,diversified symbolism,delicate and elegant language and crazy fantasies.This paper focuses on the natural description in Forster’s short stories,analyzes the evolution of the author’s view of nature,and then makes a deep interpretation of the way of returning to nature.This paper is divided into three chapters.In the first chapter,Forster’s earliest short stories make the main characters encounter the god of nature by escaping and traveling,so as to clink man with nature.The second chapter points out that the connection mode of the trip ended in failure.Then Forster turns to the broader non-reality world and attempts to return to the ideal natural home.However,the outcome is always accompanied with gloom because of the illusory way.In third chapter,Forster is disappointed at the ‘normal’(heterosexual)world.Therefore,he turns to the real demands of his own heart,and reveals his long hidden homosexual consciousness in his works.The characters of the short stories restore their ‘wild’ nature by releasing the original desires.Forster wants to connect the two sides through the homosexual behavior.Then,due to colonial expansion,radical discrimination,land and cultural aggression,this kind of connection has little effect without the protection of the ‘green wood’.Forster is eager to return to nature and regains the natural inclinations of man throughout his short stories,and the way of connection shows a diversification trend during the different stages of his creation.The idea of the natural connection between the inside and outside world is line with the ecological demands of building a harmonious society.This idea plays a positive role in the development of the times.
