E.M.Forster plays an important role both in the British Literature and the World Literature in the 20th century. His novels reflect the cross-cultural communication between people of a particular nation, ethnicity, social class, gender and sexual orientation through traveling stories. By doing these, he calls for people to improve"undeveloped heart"and look at difference reasonably in order to reach sincere connection."Connection"is put forward to resolve the conflicts in society, which is in essence an ideal communication state proposed by the author. In short, it means seeking common points while reserving difference. British and world turbulence, the authors'education background and special growing experience attract the author's interests in cross-cultural communication and forms the difference and connection view. Difference exists objectively due to the different nation, ethnicity, gender, class and sexual orientation, which is reflected in his novels as below: northern European and southern European culture, oriental and occidental culture, different gender culture, different class culture and different sexual orientation culture. It is obvious that what the author concerns is more than just revealing the difference but resisting the mainstream of the ideology by calling for humanistic spirit and forming a new cultural identity which can disregard the cultural difference. The writer expresses a strong sense about cultural dialogue and shows humanistic concern in his novels. However, E.M.Forster places all his hope to connect on improving individual character without giving due consideration to the actual state of economic and political development, which leads to the failure in connection. The key to conduct cross-cultural communication successfully is to view difference reasonably and tolerantly. If people look at difference with prejudice and refuse to understand others'culture, it will lead the neutral difference to serious conflicts; if people can keep open to difference and improve communication, it will lead the neutral difference to beneficial win-win situation.E.M.Forster has foresight to put forward"only connect"in the beginning of the 20th century and give us inspiration in eliminating cultural conflict and targeting to a harmonious world in the multi-cultural world.
