Huiguan was the famous buddhist monk in Eastern Jin and Liu Song Dynasties,he was born in 373-378,he became a monk when he was 20 years old,then he learned with Huiyuan for several years in Mount Lu,he went to Changan and learned from Kumarajiva in 404.He followed Buddhabhadra to go to Mount Lu in 410,arrived in Jiangling in 412,he spreaded buddhist scriptures in Gaoli Temple and he learned Sarvastivada-vinaya from Vimalaksa.He arrived in Jiankang in 415 and lived in Daochang Temple.The combination of monks and secular kingship became a common feature of the Eastern Jin and southern dynasties.Huiguan is the representative monk,he had closed contacts with the emperor,Linchuan,Liu Yiqing,Wang Sengda,Xie Lingyun and other celebrities,his preaching activities had get support of the Royal and aristocratic families.Although Huiguan relied on secular regime,but still wanted to maintain the development of Buddhism in China a certain degree of independence,and directly participated in the “Jushi” fight.Huiguan was one of the earliest Chinese Nirvana division,he and Daosheng had different understanding about Nirvana Buddha nature based on a gradual understanding of the dispute,this was a long debate Chinese Buddhism;he advocated the combination of dhyana and discipline has a profound impact on the development of dhyana;he created Panjiao theory and had great influence on the development of Chinese Buddhism in Sui and Tang dynasties.Huiguan as one of the leaders in the LiuSong Buddhist community,devoted his life to promoting the development of Buddhism,in his numerous preaching activities,there are two aspects: one was the organization and the translation of Buddhist sutras;The other one was the spread of Sarvastivada-vinaya,the efforts of Huiguan are huge.
