Teaching Chinese characters is an important part of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.Etymological Method to Teach Chinese Characters is one of the common teaching methods,which means to seek the origin of a specific character,find out the reason why it was created like this,and make use of its changing process to help the learners to memorize and use it.Etymological Method to Teach Chinese Characters relates to the origin and essence of the characters.Association and logical thinking play an important assistive role in the learning process.Etymological Method can be used in a wider space in the area of teaching Chinese as a foreign language whose main teaching targets are foreign adults and children.In this paper,the author tried to make clear the conceptions of etymology and etymological method to teach Chinese characters.The theoretical foundation of etymological method is discussed in the angles of Psychology,Semiology,Culturology and other related disciplines.Its limitations in practical application are pointed out and preliminary countermeasures are presented.On these basis,the text book of teaching Chinese as a foreign language “Follow Me to Learn Chinese·The Text Book of Chinese Character II” which itself contains the knowledge of etymology is selected as an example to write a teaching design.It is hoped to be referential to the future teaching.This paper contains six parts:The first part is the introduction of the research background.The second part is about the research status.The third part is about the related conceptions of etymological method and its feasibility and limitation in practical application.The fourth part is an brief introduction of text books of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and the selected textbook.The fifth part is the teaching design of the 16 unit of “Follow me to learn Chinese·The Text Book of Chinese Character II”.The sixth part is the conclusion.
